Microsoft Drops Mandatory Backup Requirement for European Windows 10 Users

With Windows 10 support ending on October 14, Microsoft is removing a contentious barrier for European users seeking extended security updates. Following pressure from the consumer advocacy group Euroconsumers, the company will now provide these critical patches without requiring users to enable Windows Backup or link their accounts to OneDrive.

The previous policy forced consumers to activate Windows Backup to qualify for an extra year of security support. This mandate effectively tethered users to Microsoft’s cloud ecosystem, often pushing them beyond the 5GB limit of free OneDrive storage and creating an opportunity for the company to upsell subscription space. By stripping away this requirement within the European Economic Area, Microsoft has bowed to demands that software security should not be contingent upon adopting auxiliary cloud services.

An official spokesperson confirmed the shift, describing the move as an effort to align the enrollment process with regional expectations. Euroconsumers lauded the decision, noting that the new, streamlined path eliminates the need for users to sync settings, applications, or credentials to keep their machines secure. While the update offers a reprieve for those holding onto older hardware, it remains a regional concession, leaving users outside the European Economic Area still subject to the original backup requirements.
