Stamford Public Schools Overhauls Transport with Zum Tech Pact

Stamford Public Schools has finalized a five-year agreement to transition its student transportation services to the Redwood City-based firm Zum starting in the 2027–2028 academic year. The district, which serves more than 15,300 students, aims to replace legacy transit models with a digital-first, real-time tracking architecture.

The partnership centers on the implementation of Zum’s Connected Mobility Experience (CMX) system. This platform provides parents and administrators with map-based ride tracking, AI-driven arrival estimates, and automated rider verification. By moving away from traditional dispatch methods, the district intends to shorten commute times and improve overall route efficiency, which the provider claims maintains a 98% on-time performance rate across its current network.

Superintendent Dr. Tamu Lucero noted that the district sought a provider capable of balancing safety requirements with modern, user-friendly communication tools. For families, the shift promises a mobile application interface that offers live updates on bus locations and student boarding status. Zum, which manages similar contracts in districts including Boston, Los Angeles, and San Francisco, will also oversee driver recruitment and training to address the ongoing national shortage of personnel. The transition marks a significant infrastructure upgrade for the Connecticut district, focusing on reducing parental anxiety through transparency and technological oversight.
