Maine Jury Awards $23.1 Million in Record Medical Malpractice Case

Aroostook County jurors have awarded $23.1 million to Robert Giordano, a 40-year-old man left permanently paralyzed following a series of diagnostic failures at Northern Light A.R. Gould Hospital. The verdict marks the largest non-death medical malpractice award in Maine history, concluding a two-week trial in Caribou.

The legal action centered on a December 2020 emergency room visit where a radiologist failed to identify a significant bony calcification compressing Giordano's spinal canal. Attorneys Travis Brennan and Chuck Hehmeyer argued that hospital staff ignored the "ticking time bomb" in his spine, even as his neurological condition deteriorated over the following six weeks. When Giordano reported an inability to stand, providers dismissed his symptoms as drug-seeking behavior and failed to order emergency imaging.

By January 30, 2026, the spinal compression resulted in total, permanent paralysis. Subsequent surgeries at Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center were unable to restore function, leaving the Madawaska resident requiring lifelong medical support. The jury's decision holds Northern Light Health accountable for the failure to follow internal reporting protocols and the subsequent medical negligence that destroyed the plaintiff's quality of life. The damages are intended to cover extensive past and future care, emotional distress, and the permanent loss of bodily function.
