ASPCA Launches Digital Tool to Help Shoppers Identify Humane Food

Nearly 7 in 10 Americans struggle to locate humanely raised meat, eggs, and dairy, according to new national survey data. To bridge this gap, the ASPCA has introduced ASPCA ShopKind, a digital platform designed to help consumers navigate a marketplace often crowded with misleading labeling and industrial agriculture.

The tool maps products from more than 250 farms and brands that meet high welfare standards, such as bans on animal confinement and requirements for outdoor access. By centralizing data from over 34,000 locations nationwide, the platform allows users to filter for specific needs, including products free from male chick culling or those sourced from healthier chicken breeds. The initiative replaces the organization's decade-old Shop With Your Heart program, offering enhanced functionality like personalized shopping lists and geolocation for local farmers markets and retailers.

Daisy Freund, vice president of Farm & Industry Engagement for the ASPCA, noted that the platform aims to amplify the voices of welfare-conscious farmers whose values are frequently obscured by factory-farmed alternatives. This launch coincides with the organization's 160th anniversary, marking a continued push to increase transparency in the food system. Beyond identifying sources, the platform provides educational resources on decoding food labels and promotes plant-based or pasture-raised alternatives to encourage more sustainable consumption habits.
