Rheinmetall and LIG D&A Forge Defense Partnership for European Market

South Korea’s LIG Defense&Aerospace and German industrial giant Rheinmetall are forming a strategic joint venture to supply advanced air defense systems across NATO territory. The collaboration aims to integrate South Korean missile technology with European production capacity, creating a comprehensive, multi-layered shield for the continent.

The partnership focuses on the localization, development, and marketing of LIG D&A’s medium- and long-range missile systems. By pairing these with Rheinmetall’s existing short-range air defense capabilities, the companies intend to offer complete, turn-key solutions. Both firms have also committed to co-developing new technologies to address identified gaps in short-range defense, a sector that has seen a surge in demand following recent conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East.

Rheinmetall will hold a majority stake in the new venture, which is designed to shorten supply chains and ensure reliable delivery of munitions and systems. Oliver Dürr, CEO of Rheinmetall’s Air Defence division, noted that the combined portfolios are intended to meet both immediate regional requirements and future security challenges. Ickhyun Shin, President and CEO of LIG D&A, added that the alliance seeks to establish a new defense powerhouse, providing interoperable solutions that bolster Europe’s integrated air and missile defense capabilities.
