Google unveils redesigned smart speaker powered by Gemini

A flattened sphere design and a transition to Gemini voice technology define Google’s latest hardware play. While the new Google Home Speaker promises 360-degree audio and a bold aesthetic departure from the previous Nest line, consumers will have to wait until spring 2026 to bring the device into their homes.

The device sits between the sizes of the older Nest Mini and Nest Audio, mirroring the footprint of a HomePod Mini but with a wider, flatter profile. Google is moving away from the Nest branding entirely, opting for a streamlined look available in white, gray, green, and a vibrant berry red. Priced at $99.99, the unit is built to serve as the physical anchor for the new Gemini for Home platform.

During an early demonstration in New York City, the speaker demonstrated improved acoustic capabilities, delivering clear vocals and balanced bass through its 360-degree audio array. Beyond standalone music playback, users can pair two units for stereo separation or integrate them with a Google TV Streamer for a surround sound setup. The shift from Google Assistant to Gemini marks a significant internal pivot, as the hardware was engineered specifically to handle the more complex processing demands of the new AI-powered smart home ecosystem.
