The new feature, dubbed Your Algorithm, currently surfaces the categories the system believes align with a user’s interests. Users can now intervene to prune these topics, signaling a departure from the previous, opaque ranking models that relied solely on implicit behavioral signals like taps, shares, and watch time. While the current iteration is limited to broad topics, internal development is already underway to incorporate specific requests for content creators, mood-based filtering, and distinct media formats.
Instagram Grants Users Direct Control Over Feed Recommendations
Instagram is shifting its core recommendation strategy, allowing users to manually audit and adjust the topics dictating their main feed. This update, announced by head of Instagram Adam Mosseri, marks a move toward user-driven curation, aiming to replace passive algorithmic observation with active personalization tools across the entire platform.

Mosseri framed this technical pivot as a philosophical correction for the platform. He acknowledged that while algorithmic systems are engineering triumphs, they have historically stripped users of agency, creating an experience where the feed happens to the individual rather than being built by them. By making these ranking models legible and editable, Instagram hopes to mitigate the user anxiety often associated with feeling like a passive subject of an automated system. This expansion follows similar, smaller-scale implementations on the platform's Reels and Explore tabs, signaling a broader commitment to rebalancing the power dynamic between the feed and the viewer.
