Gautam Chand Jain: Building a Global Stone Empire from Hyderabad

“Gautam, how can you even consider entering this business?” friends asked Gautam Chand Jain in 1991 when he pivoted from textiles to stone exports. Three decades later, that skepticism has been replaced by a global operation generating over US$100 million annually in revenue through high-end quartz and granite countertops.

Gautam Chand Jain: Building a Global Stone Empire from Hyderabad

Jain’s ascent began with a grueling, self-funded tour of the United States. As a newcomer from Hyderabad, he faced closed doors and skepticism toward Indian-sourced stone. By positioning his granite as a novel, cost-competitive alternative for kitchen designers, he secured early partnerships with major distributors. This first-mover advantage transformed a niche import into a near-monopoly, establishing the foundation for Pokarna’s expansion.

A pivotal shift occurred when a client suggested he pivot to engineered quartz. Jain embraced the move, partnering with Italian machinery firm Breton to train his team on the latest manufacturing technology. Despite launching the product line during the global financial crisis, the company saw immediate success, running its plants 24 hours a day as demand recovered. Today, Pokarna operates multiple facilities and is expanding its capacity to 2.23 million square meters of production, positioning it among the largest quartz manufacturers globally.

Central to Jain’s philosophy is a commitment to long-term loyalty and ethical business practices. He maintains relationships with his original banker, first vendors, and founding employees, viewing these ties as the bedrock of his success. By prioritizing being the best over being the biggest, Jain continues to push for technological dominance in the engineered stone sector, driven by a perfectionist streak that demands excellence in every slab produced.
