Xbox mandates four-day office week for Puget Sound staff

Starting February 1, 2027, Xbox employees based in the Puget Sound area must work from the office four days a week. The shift, detailed in an internal memo from chief people officer Jacinda Chislum Pearson, aims to boost collaboration for staff living within a 50-mile radius of the Redmond campus.

The new requirement targets thousands of workers within commuting distance of Studio D. Pearson argues that physical proximity simplifies decision-making and collaborative reviews, allowing teams to resolve issues without the friction of constant digital scheduling. To ensure the commute proves worthwhile, the company is encouraging leaders to prioritize in-person problem-solving and play-testing over solitary video calls.

This policy change arrives amid a period of significant structural upheaval at the gaming division. Microsoft previously disclosed plans to eliminate roughly 20 percent of Xbox roles by the end of June 2027, following a series of layoffs throughout late 2024 and early 2025. While established in-office practices at specific game studios will remain untouched, employees currently holding exemptions for remote work must resubmit their requests under the updated guidelines.
