Mississippi Correctional Suicide Prevention Model Goes National

With suicides in Mississippi prisons dropping from 11 in 2021 to two so far in 2026, the American Correctional Association is bringing its first national summit to the state. The event aims to dissect this 82% reduction and determine how to replicate the state's behavioral health strategies elsewhere.

The upcoming summit, titled Insights for Impact, will convene in early 2027 to evaluate the Mississippi Department of Corrections' (MDOC) shift in safety protocols. By integrating data-driven behavioral health assessments, crisis intervention, and staff training, MDOC and its healthcare provider, VitalCore, have sought to overhaul the environment within their facilities. The program emphasizes that success stems not only from clinical pathways but from culture change and leadership engagement.

MDOC Commissioner Burl Cain credited the progress to a systemic focus on emotional stability and staff-led interventions, noting that the initiative was supported by Governor Tate Reeves. Beyond the Mississippi-specific findings, the summit will address the practical challenges of implementing these protocols in other jurisdictions. A preview of the findings is scheduled for the ACA Winter Conference in Phoenix this January, where officials will prepare for the larger national dialogue.
