Fujifilm Debuts Instax Square 2 With Analog Color Filters

Fujifilm is doubling down on its commitment to pure analog photography with the launch of the Instax Square 2. By eschewing digital sensors in favor of physical color filters, the company aims to offer users tactile creative control over their instant prints without straying from the brand's established minimalist design language.

The camera arrives later this month at a retail price of $119.95, mirroring the launch cost of the 2020 SQ1 model. While the internal mechanics remain rooted in traditional instant film technology, the device introduces a mood filter switch located near the lens. This toggle allows photographers to slide either a warm or cool filter directly into the optical path, shifting the image toward golden tones or crisp, blue-tinted aesthetics.

Physically, the device features a sculpted, rounded chassis that departs from the sharper geometry of previous iterations. Users retain access to a rotating lens ring to toggle between landscape, standard, and close-up modes, with the latter supporting focus distances as tight as 0.3 meters. Automatic exposure and flash adjustments handle the technical heavy lifting, while an integrated selfie mirror and optical viewfinder provide standard framing assistance. Alongside the hardware, Fujifilm is releasing Soft Haze film, a new emulsion priced at $18.99 for 10 exposures that emphasizes diffused shadows and lower color saturation.
