The scale of the challenge is significant, with approximately 3 million rural Veterans currently enrolled in VA healthcare. A study covering 93,063 primary knee replacements between 2019 and 2024 revealed that 62.5% of these procedures were performed through Community Care, often complicating oversight. The VA Office of Inspector General has frequently cited referral delays and scheduling bottlenecks within this split system, placing an administrative burden on patients during their most critical recovery weeks.
ROMTech’s PortableConnect platform aims to mitigate these logistical hurdles by providing clinician-directed therapy and remote monitoring. According to company data, users averaged 38 sessions during the initial two-week post-discharge period, far exceeding the 4 to 6 sessions typical of standard ambulatory physical therapy. Peter Arn, CEO of ROMTech, stated that the technology ensures clinicians remain connected to a patient’s progress regardless of whether the surgery occurred within the VA or through a community provider.
