Eli Lilly Breaks Ground on $6.5 Billion Manufacturing Hub in Houston

The Houston site serves as a cornerstone of Lilly's $50 billion initiative to reshore medicine production. Once operational, the facility will specialize in small-molecule medicines and advanced therapeutics, including oligonucleotides. This expansion is designed to meet rising domestic demand while positioning the company to export American-made treatments globally.

To support the facility, Lilly is committing $12.5 million to a workforce development program at San Jacinto College. This partnership focuses on creating training pathways for local residents, requiring no prior pharmaceutical experience for entry-level roles. The company expects the site to generate more than 600 permanent high-wage jobs and approximately 4,000 construction positions during the building phase.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott characterized the investment as the largest active pharmaceutical ingredient project in state history. The facility will integrate advanced digital automation, machine learning, and AI-driven systems to optimize manufacturing precision. Production at the site will center on Foundayo, a GLP-1 receptor agonist currently under regulatory review in over 40 countries, with a full global rollout projected for 2027.
