Held alongside the 81st United Nations General Assembly, the summit brought together heads of state and industry titans at the Marriott Marquis to shift the narrative from resource extraction to domestic value creation. Guterres emphasized that Africa’s natural wealth, particularly its critical minerals, should generate local jobs and manufacturing rather than serving solely as raw exports for the global market.
African Union Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf echoed this sentiment, highlighting that the continent’s 1.5 billion people represent a massive, untapped market. To unlock this potential, he identified the urgent need for expanded energy infrastructure, accessible finance, and the dismantling of existing trade barriers. Business heavyweights, including Aliko Dangote and Africa Finance Corporation CEO Samaila Zubairu, reinforced the call to prioritize local processing chains over traditional export models.
