Gautam Gupta on pivoting Macawber Beekay toward green energy

“We are the only company in the country to have innovated, developed and patented a waste-to-green-coal manufacturing technology on a commercial scale,” says Gautam Gupta, Joint Managing Director of Macawber Beekay. This milestone marks a significant shift for the firm from traditional engineering to industrial sustainability.

Macawber Beekay has spent years refining its waste-to-green-coal technology, moving beyond industry status quo to establish a new commercial benchmark. The company now operates four such plants, with one active facility in Varanasi. Under Gupta’s leadership, the firm has more than doubled its manufacturing footprint from 44,000 to 94,000 square meters, supporting an aggressive expansion into green energy and defense manufacturing.

Beyond coal conversion, the company is positioning itself in the hydrogen sector. It has already successfully manufactured and tested a hydrogen electrolyzer, which was delivered to Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited. Gupta attributes this evolution to a combination of technical engineering and financial strategy, noting that the company’s ability to thrive depends on a robust supply chain. By maintaining long-term relationships with partners like Atlas Copco, ABB, and Siemens, the firm ensures the reliability needed for complex, high-precision projects. For Gupta, constant innovation remains the primary mechanism for meeting national industrial demands.
