Green Science Alliance Targets Ukraine for Biodegradable Plastic Production

A Japanese startup is repurposing agricultural waste into sustainable materials through a UN-backed industrial recovery initiative. Green Science Alliance, led by Dr. Ryohei Mori, is currently executing a feasibility study in Ukraine to replace petroleum-derived plastics with plant-based alternatives produced from local straw and corn husk biomass.

The project operates under the Green Industrial Recovery Project for Ukraine, funded by Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry and implemented by UNIDO. Partnering with the local firm TETRAVION K Ltd., the team aims to establish a manufacturing ecosystem that turns organic waste into biodegradable resins, adhesives, and coatings. This initiative marks a shift toward localized green production, moving beyond simple technology transfer to the actual co-creation of industrial capacity.

Following field surveys near Kyiv in March, company representatives engaged with local food and biogas sectors to secure a steady supply of raw materials. The team also coordinated with Ukrainian regulatory bodies to ensure that new plastic products meet national safety and chemical composition standards. If the current feasibility phase proves successful, GSA plans to transition into a pilot technology demonstration, utilizing the prototypes currently under development to prove the viability of large-scale, plant-based manufacturing in the region.
