The research, conducted by Mindtrip, Sabre, Sojern, and MMGY Travel Intelligence, highlights a shift in how trips are planned. Among younger demographics, the adoption is particularly aggressive: 69% of Millennials and 63% of Gen Z travelers utilize AI assistants as frequently as social media. These users are not merely browsing for inspiration; 40% have discovered new destinations through AI, and 29% have actively altered their travel plans based on machine-generated recommendations.
Travelers Are Outpacing the Industry in AI Adoption
While more than half of leisure travelers now rely on artificial intelligence to build itineraries and scout destinations, the organizations meant to host them are lagging behind. A new study reveals a stark two-year gap between consumer behavior and the digital infrastructure currently offered by destination marketing organizations.

Despite this consumer momentum, the institutional response remains slow. Only 22% of destination marketing organizations (DMOs) currently feature AI-driven planning tools on their websites, and a mere 26% possess a documented strategy for the technology. This hesitation carries significant risk, as 72% of DMO leaders acknowledge that failure to integrate AI within the next two years could render their organizations irrelevant in the discovery phase of travel. As travelers increasingly demand utility—such as price comparisons and real-time itinerary building—the disconnect between what visitors expect and what official sites provide is widening, potentially ceding influence to third-party tech platforms.
