The update brings a variety of titles to the platform, including Lady Bird, Seventeen Again, and Hell’s Kitchen. Alongside the on-demand expansion, Google has bolstered its live TV offering, which now features more than 300 channels spanning news, sports, and reality programming. New additions to the live lineup include the Yahoo! Sports Network, Bloomberg TV Plus, and The Martha Stewart Channel.
Google TV Freeplay adds on-demand streaming to its free library
Google is pivoting its ad-supported Freeplay service from a linear channel model to an on-demand platform, allowing viewers to select from over 10,000 movies and television shows. This shift moves the service away from its roots as a collection of always-on feeds toward a more flexible, user-controlled viewing experience.

This move places Google in direct competition with established free, ad-supported platforms like Tubi, The Roku Channel, and Pluto TV. As major subscription services continue to hike monthly costs, the market for free, ad-supported content has seen significant growth, with industry players like Disney Plus reportedly exploring similar tiers. Google intends to maintain this momentum by rolling out consistent updates to the Freeplay library throughout the remainder of the year.
