The radar deployment will see units positioned at the ends of the airport's two runways, creating a continuous 360-degree monitoring zone. This technology, which originated through contracts with the U.S. Air Force and NASA, automates risk alerts, transmitting data directly to monitors in control towers and bird control vehicles. DeTect’s APAC regional office in South Korea will oversee the project, with manufacturing based in the United States.
Jakarta’s Soekarno-Hatta Airport Installs MERLIN Bird Detection Radar
Soekarno-Hatta International Airport has commissioned DeTect, Inc. to install its MERLIN 7360 True3D radar system to mitigate wildlife strikes. The move aims to bolster flight safety at one of Southeast Asia’s busiest hubs by providing air traffic controllers and airfield teams with real-time, 3D tracking of hazardous bird activity.
Gary Andrews, CEO of DeTect, noted that the selection by InJourney Airports marks a significant expansion for the company’s reach in the region. With over 600 systems currently active in aviation safety roles across the EU, Canada, and the Middle East, the Jakarta installation joins a global network of monitoring infrastructure designed to minimize the collision risks posed by avian activity near flight paths.
